clark 8: a week in the psychiatric treatment unit

"clark 8" was the first zine i received after i saw erin post on livejournal about how wonderful it is. i contacted megan immediately and i paid her in candy for an issue of the zine!

this is a one time zine about megan's week in a psychiatric unit in spring of 2003. "clark 8" is very detailed- it describes the daily schedule for the ward, journal excerpts before/during and after her stay, who other patients were, what she did and didn't find helpful about her stay and she even includes a list of things which she recommends you bring people while they are in hospital.

it is a text-thick zine- some are collage based or heavy with images, but this is more like a small book. it is important for me to mention that it is not dull, boring, or repetitive. this is a very readable zine and megan uses clear, not flowery or cryptic language. she includes some self-portraits and photocopies of her hospital bracelet and discharge sheet. reading "clark 8" is an intimate experience; you feel as if you are sitting face-to-face listening to her account.

after reading "clark 8" i was hooked on zines and i went on to order many more. i highly recommend it as a springboard into zines- it is a wonderful example of a well-written, in-depth zine.
