quartus, the mail issue

i was excited for this zine, not only because vickie published some of my writing in it (thank you!) but because vickie's zines are overflowing with art, honesty and care. the focus in "quartus" is on communication and mail. there is also a huge section in the middle which is called "seventy-three things about me: because i couldn't think of one-hundred". this part is done in a cut and paste format with lots of black and white pictures.

she fills the rest of this half-size zine with letters from and to her. there are also a couple of random pieces of writing and lists, which adds to the personal feel of vickie's work. my favourite letters are the one where her now-husband asked her to marry him (so sweet!) and the excerpts from the long letter which her estranged father wrote her from jail. the most disturbing part of this perhaps, is vickie's reply to him which reveals some unsettling details from her childhood. vickie is never attention-seeking with her work- but always trusting of the reader.

vickie also uses some of the zine reviews from this very website to let people know about some of her favourite zines. of course, this only adds to the high quality of quartus ;)! but seriously, another sparkling zine from vickie, complete with a stunning coloured cover (a collage of stamps and mail paraphernalia). charming :)
